Empire: TV's Latest Trailblazer

Empire

If you're in the mood to watch a fantastic, drama-filled new television series then Empire is definitely for you! With already 11 plus million viewers, Empire is sure to be television's next biggest trailblazer! Empire is about a family of talented rappers and singers. However, there is much family backstory that comes in to play from the very beginning, during the pilot episode of the show. The show isn't just about music and family, but it is also a show that sends very powerful messages on a weekly basis. The main character in this show is money hungry, Lucious Lyon, played by actor Terrence Howard. One of Lucious's sons, Jamal, is gay. Lucious does not accept Jamal's lifestyle and often pays little to no attention to him. Jamal is an incredibly talented singer and songwriter with a heart of gold, but Lucious favors his youngest son, Hakeem, played by Bryshere Y. Gray. Hakeem is also a part of his father's music empire. However, unlike his brother, Hakeem prefers to rap and stays very much on the hip hop scene.

Listen above to Jamal Lyon, played by Jussie Smollett, singing a powerful song about not being good enough. You will be moved to tears! I felt some goosebumps and was deeply inspired while listening to him sing. He has such a beautiful and amazing voice!

The Empire Cast; Pictured from left to right: Andre Lyon (Trai Bryers), Cookie Lyon (Tariji P. Henson), Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard), Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett), and Hakeem Lyon (Bryshere Y. Gray). Below you can watch the official trailer for Empire, seen on FOX.

Another important issue discussed in this show is that of the horrible, debilitating disease known as ALS. Lucious Lyon is secretly diagnosed by a doctor and is hiding his health secret from his family. I am amazed and proud that this show is bringing about such awareness for an important cause. I hope that more money will be raised for this cause and that a cure for ALS will soon be discovered. To find out more about ALS, visit The ALS Association's website.

My favorite character in the show is Cookie Lyon (pictured above), the matriarch of the Lyon family, who returns to her family's empire after spending 17 years in prison for drug dealing. Despite being sentenced to jail, there is much more to Cookie's story then you realize initially. Cookie, played by actress Taraji P. Henson, is a firecracker with epic style and confidence!

Aside from her terrific fashion sense and sassy personality, Cookie also has the ear for spotting talent and has taken over managing her son, Jamal's, career; therefore, setting up somewhat of a sibling rivalry between Jamal and Hakeem. The rivalry is brewing; however, the brothers are really close and together they make a musical phenomenon that defy the odds! Listen to the video below and watch their amazing chemistry unfold! You will understand what I mean when I say that, I guarantee it!

I hope you all tune into this awesome new show, which features music from the talented music producer, Timbaland. It airs on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m., on FOX, right after American Idol.
